More than 170 Years of Copello History The Copello sweets factory was started in 1826 by Pietro Podestà, who was called "Peostin". In 1871 his son Francesco continued with his father's work, keeping the tradition and the quality of the products till 1901, as this time a nephew Giuseppe Copello, father of Angela, Pippo and Maria, became the owner. During this time, the sweets factory expanded abroad. This expansion was create to some extent by many Ligurians emigrant abroad to south and north America to find work. From their new homes, they bought pandolce and the famous Torrone Copello for Christmas. The one and only transformation fo the shop was to the Liberty Floreale style of furnishings in 1911Since then nothing has changed at 162 Martiri della Liberazione. At the beginning of the century eletricity came and the owner bought an electric mixing machine. Advertise in the 1913 local journal "La Sveglia" it was define as the "electric processing of pandolce", also in this period the first motor vehicles arrived. Mr. Copello, ever mindful of the needs of his clientele (especially noblemen) began the sale of fuel from the shop, because of this he was issued license N° 1 by the city of Chiavari. But Mr Copello also was considerate of the people with less money allowing them to buy the " Fregugge" (crumbs) wich were always of good quality, but not nice enough to offer to regular customer at normal prices. In 1971 Mr. Copello sold the shop to Mr. & Mrs. Luigi Antonini who wanted to continue in the same way of Master Pippo Copello. Also they retained the shop's name. During the 30 years of management bu the Antonini Family, the shop continues to be a reference mark for gourmets from many regions of Italy. Tradiotional products are still produced, such as pandolce, torrone, dolcezze di Chiavari, quince jam and the 2000 soft ice cream invented by Pippo in 1930. The ice cream was so named because Pippo thought that in the year 2000 everyone would have a "ghiacciaia" (freezer) to keep it in. During the Antonini's ownership, the shop's business has been expanded to include the renowed caffeteria, a new departement for gifts and for wedding and christening souvenir and our service for those cerimonies. From 1990 Pasticceria Copello has provided a special Christmas gift service for companies that wish to give their customers or collaborators special gifts, and since May 2000 is operating an e_commerce site of Liguria typical products as Olive oil, pesto sauce, wine doc, genoese pandolce, we are waiting for you online |
